Fred Drake is Professor Emeritus of History. While teaching at Illinois State University, Drake promoted civis literacy and history education. Between 1997 to 2007, he promoted history and civic education in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as a representative of the U.S. Department of Education. History Teaching Methods Frederick D. Drake and Lynn R. Nelson co-authored the history teaching methods book: Engagement in Teaching History: Theory and Practices for Middle and Secondary Teachers. The focus of Drake and Nelson's book is on teaching history by "doing" rather than by simply memorizing lists of dates, people, places, and facts. To accomplish this, Drake and Nelson promote the integration of primary source analysis into instruction. |
