Doug Hanks (born 1969), of Charlotte, North Carolina, ran as a Republican for the Charlotte City Council in 2005. He withdrew his bid on August 5, 2005 after his 4000 posts across three years on the white supremacist web forum Stormfront.org were publicized by the Rhinoceros Times. In January 2005, Hanks "scaled a flagpole in Elmwood Cemetery" to reattach a Confederate flag. Though the flag was again removed by the City, he capitalized upon his feat by holding a rally in support of the flag at the same cemetery in March, calling upon "at least a dozen SFers " to attend.<ref name=Rubin/> The discovery of his Stormfront posts led Charlotte's Republican establishment, including Mayor Pat McCrory, to strongly condemn Hanks.<ref nameWhitmire/><ref nameRubin/> The discovery revealed not only Hanks' racist and antisemitic remarks, but also his plan to write a book entitled Patriot Act inspired by the Turner Diaries.<ref nameRubin/> Hanks defended his participation in the forum, asserting that he was only acting like a white supremacist in order to obtain necessary information for his book, and that he is not truly a racist.<ref nameRubin/> Though Hanks initially stated that he would remain a candidate on August 4, 2005, by the end of the day he had announced his plan to drop out of the race so as not "to jeopardize anyone else that's going to be running."<ref nameRubin/> He formally renounced his candidacy the following day.<ref nameWhitmire/>
