It originally started as a group dedicated to the protest of Facebook charging membership fees. The original admin discovered that the concept of Facebook charging members was only a rumor. He changed the title of the group to "CLOSED.", explained what had happened, and removed himself from the group. The members of the group ran with the idea and their brilliance quickly shone through.
One individual, Scott Kotzur, seized the opportunity to grasp administrative privileges while the group was admin-less, and became the group's admin, and carefully modified the photos, descriptions, and other group attributed to spark interest in the Facebook community. People curious with the sites title and mission statement soon became members, prompting others to join as well. Early in his time as admin he made the mistake of creating fellow admins. Some of the admins proved to not be interested in maintaining the mission Scott had adopted, and changed the group name to OPEN. The issue was quickly noticed, and corrected. There was special care taken to remove any risk of such future events.
Like any viral internet item there is no predicting how large this group could potentially become. Currently it sits around 400,000 members, moderate by Facebook standards, but growing quickly. The current admin, Scott, showed interest in the future of the group in saying, "I really don't know where the group is headed or what will be said next, but i like it that way. The members of the group are the captains of the direction of the group." Scott has tried to spark worldwide interest by making officers of members from various countries, states and regions.
