The Million Can March is the brainchild of a group of University of Michigan football fans who dreamed of upgrading their Saturday morning tailgating experience. The idea was first discussed back in 2006 and started as a conversation about things needed to sustain their fall tailgates (i.e. propane, plates, cups, etc..). The conversation progressed to different ways to come up with funds for the needs of the group. The solution came as their leader looked around the tailgate at all the empty cans and bottles strewn about. These empties all had the $.10 Michigan deposit and were being picked up by other individuals who would then cash them in for the money. At that point the group decided to start saving their own empties instead of discarding them.
The plan began to take shape, but no further action was taken at that time. The leader came up with the name Million Can March after doing the math and realizing that they could raise $100,000 if they could successfully collect 1,000,000 empties. With that money, they could buy the ultimate tailgating accessory - an RV.
In the middle of the 2009 football season, the group decided to finally take action with the Million Can March. A group was formed on Facebook and they got the word out about what they were doing. Support grew quickly and they had rouphly 50 members within the first month. Progress was measurable very early on and continues to grow.
Currently, they are about 2,000 empties into their quest. Ultimately, their goal is for this to be a five year plan. You can follow their progress or join their quest on the facebook group Million Can March.
