Bogatell

Bogatell is a white wine made from 100% Garnacha Blanca grapes. The brand is one of the first to use natural yeast in the global market place. According to Ross (1997), for many years, winemakers practice a fermentation technique known as “indigenous yeast” fermentation can help improve wine quality and creates complexity.
Region
Bogatell is produced in the small mountainous regions of Catalunya called Terra Alta. This region is has been widely known as a family producing region, but since 2000, they have adapted to a more traditional form of wine making with certain brands. The co-op in Batea, Tarragona uses this technique with grants from the Catalan government to implement a more natural way of making wine. One of the first wines for production using this technique is the 2010 vintage of Bogatell under the guidance of the Clua winery.
According to, Font et. al (2009), although the Catalan grape area is not especially relevant in quantity, it is in quality. The Catalan viticulture sector specializes in quality wines, with around 95% of the vineyard area devoted to produce "Quality Wine Produced Specific to Region" (DO ).
Cooperatives
While cooperatives play an undoubtedly relevant rôle, affiliation in the wine sector is lower relative to other food products andcountries. For example, almost 70 percent of the milk produced withinthe EU-15 is marketed through cooperatives (Foro Agrario, 2000). In comparison, following expert quantifications, around half of Catalangrape production is controlled by cooperatives.

The production of Bogatell is under the guidance of Xavi Clua (wine maker), the Catalan Government and the co-op in Batea. The techniques used by the co-op in Batea in the brand Bogatell is what Alan Tenscher (Senior Wine maker at Franciscan Vineyards, California) comments in the article by Ross (1997)) as being popularized by influential wine critics who are proponents of wines made with more natural, less interventionist techniques. These techniques impart a character to the wine hard to find in the commercial market.
