Bishopgarth is the name of West Yorkshire Police's Training and Development Centre situated just north of Wakefield city centre close to the Force's Headquarters on Laburnam Road. The name originates from the site's previous resident the Bishop of Wakefield. West Yorkshire Police acquired the site shortly after the Second World War transferring training from headquarters to the new location. A theatre block and additional classrooms were built in 1952 and later in 1969 a hotel, sports hall and cadet hostel were added. Another building on the same site, designed by architect Hubert Bennett KT, passed to the Police Authority in the 1990s and provided a much needed suite of additional classrooms and offices.
