Bert Mizusawa is a Brigadier General in the Army Reserve, attorney, small business owner and a candidate for the Republican nomination for congress in Virginia's 2nd congressional district.
Early Life and Career
Bert was raised in Hampton Roads and graduated from Kecoughtan High School, where he participated in varsity football, wrestling and track. He won a presidential appointment to the U.S. Military Academy, becoming the first member of his family to ever attend college, and graduated first in his West Point class. An Airborne Ranger, Bert served as a paratrooper during the Cold War in Europe and commanded an elite infantry unit in the Korean DMZ, where he was decorated for actions in combat by both the United States and the Republic of Korea.
After his two overseas assignments, Bert earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. While at Harvard, he was selected as a MacArthur Fellow and interned on the US Attorney’s Counterdrug Task Force. From 1990 to 1994, Bert was an attorney with an internationally prominent Wall Street law firm, where he gained valuable insights into US and global financial markets.
From 1995 to 1998, Bert was appointed to the Professional Staff of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee where he assisted the Republican Chairman with oversight of national defense. In 1996, he authored the national security platform adopted at the Republican National Convention. In 1998, Bert was appointed as one of the youngest and most senior (three-star level) Senior Executives in the Pentagon, where he oversaw the Army’s interagency and international affairs.
From 2001 to 2004, Bert was president of a small business that developed and implemented technology for knowledge management and antiterrorism applications. During this period, he also served as senior commander of the Army Reserve’s cyber operations. In 2005, Bert was recalled to active duty to lead special missions in Afghanistan and later Iraq.
Bert Mizusawa is a Brigadier General in the Army Reserve, and one of the Army’s most highly decorated officers. His awards include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and 30 other awards as well as the Combat Infantryman, Master Parachutist, Ranger, Air Assault and Joint Chiefs of Staff Badges. He has also received a humanitarian service award, a civilian service award, and awards from two foreign governments. Bert holds a Masters in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College and is a graduate of National Defense University’s CAPSTONE program. He is currently assigned as Deputy Commanding General of an 8000-soldier communications command.
Bert has served in a pro bono capacity as President of two Veterans Organizations, and as a Board Member for four non-profit associations supporting U.S. national security.
Bert is married to the former Yvonne Facchina, of Montross, Virginia, a graduate of the University of Virginia and University of Virginia Law School. They have three sons, Mark, Michael and Eric.
