The Berlin Citizen is a free weekly newspaper published in Berlin, Connecticut, United States. For 17 years, Berlin lacked a local newspaper since the Berlin Eagle ceased publication in 1970. Brothers Arthur and David Durity and their friends Steven and Kevin Cyr started the Citizen to fill the gap. The first publication debuted in January 1997 but was suspended in July of the same year after the paper ran out of money. In October, the Meriden Record-Journal bought the newspaper after seeing how well it was received by the community. The Citizen has won statewide awards, including first place in the "business" category and second place in the "sports" category in 2008. The Citizen is mailed free to an estimated 10,000 Berlin residents and businesses.
