Athena programs are different in that students are enrolled at small schools overseas in an effort to maintain the personalized service that Athena prides itself on providing.
Athena offers its students programs that are focused on intense, cultural immersion which puts them in touch with the locals of their host country, elements of the host culture, and other international students from around the world to ensure a well-rounded, diverse experience.
History Athena was founded by Stacy Benander, who had been interested in international education ever since she studied in Toledo, Spain in college. After working at an international law firm, Stacy switched to higher education. As the Director of the International Office at a smaller liberal arts school in Ohio, Stacy discovered that few, if any, study abroad companies catered to small school students. Many study abroad providers worked with large schools overseas, which is exactly what small school students did not want. With that in mind, she created Athena Study Abroad, named after the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena. The company's first two locations were in Tuscania and Florence, Italy.
Stacy, recognizing how much each student takes from study abroad, wanted to implement a program component that allows students to give back to the world that welcomes them abroad. So when Athena was founded, a charitable arm of Athena called Students Offering Support (S.O.S.) was formed, which identifies a select group of global charities that donations are made to on behalf of students each year.
