Career
Andreas Wimmer was born on January 1, 1965, in Austria. He attended school in Europe and entered military service in 1983 before joining the Austrian Foreign Service in 1990. While serving in the Austrian Foreign Service, he was posted to Moscow during the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt attempt and to Peru during the waning days of waning days of the Shining Path terror. In 1997 he witnessed the fall of Suharto in Indonesia. He is a graduate from the Nanyang Technological University now pursuing a PhD. Andreas Wimmer is focusing on the increasing militancy of selected civil society groups in Indonesia. He is concentrating on moderate and extremist activists who are infiltrating established political and special interest organizations. A special area of interest is the cross-over activists motivated primarily by Jihadist ideology who are joining environmental and civil society groups in the context of a new form of an Asia centric eco-terrorism movement. This movement espouses the philosophies of Marx, Trotsky, and Louis Auguste Blanqui. Andreas Wimmer is critical of the lack of legislative oversight and governmental monitoring of radical civil society actors in developing countries.
Andreas Wimmer is the Asian Director for the non-profit Deutsches Asienforschungszentrum, an academic think tank that specializes in developmental, investment, and environmental protection issues in Asia.
