Alex Burton (born February 26, 1968) is a Vancouver lawyer and president of the Vancouver Kingsway riding association. In 2012, he stood as a candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada, but withdrew from the race in December. Burton works as a Crown Prosecutor in the Organized Crime Unit for the B.C. Attorney General, and previously was an Assistant District Attorney in Manhattan. He sits on the board of the Mount Pleasant Community Center Association, and recently completed a five-year term on the board of the Vancouver City Hall Child Care Society. He holds a B.A. from Dalhousie University and LL.B from the University of Victoria. Burton launched his "exploratory campaign" for the Liberal leadership on October 1, 2012. Soon thereafter, he began a cross-country tour to raise awareness of his platform and gauge support for his campaign. Burton's bid for the Liberal Party leadership was supported by several well-known Liberal strategists, such as Kevin Chalmers, David Gruber and Mike Hillman. Burton dropped out of the leadership race on December 12, 2012. His campaign manager told the Canadian Press that they did not believe he could raise sufficient funds to run a competitive campaign. Instead, Burton will focus on running as a Liberal candidate for parliament in 2015.
