Ahmad Shafaat is a Pakistani Canadian mathematician and scientist. He is a professor at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He is also a noted islamic scholar who has published numerous articles and papers. Life and Education Born in Lahore, Pakistan, Shafaat completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Punjab in Lahore and specialized in Mathematics. In 1966, he went to Australia where he later received his Ph.D in Mathematics from the Australian National University in Canberra in 1968. Academic Career Following that he travelled to Canada and became a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Winnipeg in Manitoba. After spending some more time in teaching and research at Université Laval in Quebec City and King Abdul Aziz University in Saudi Arabia, Shafaat moved back to Canada and settled in Montreal. A noted scholar in his own field , Shafaat is also a distinguished student of Comparative Religion and has authored a number of books and pamphlets about Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. He is recognized by many as a Biblical theologian. With the collobaration of his intellectual partner Irshad Ahmad Ansari who specializes in Textual Criticism of the Bible, Shafaat also published a very useful and critical study of the analysis of Matthew 12:40, known as the Sign of Jonah. Ahmad Shafaat and Irshad Ansari are considered by some as leading Muslim scholars of Christianity and Judaism in North America and have written much esteemed pieces that are very well known in academic circles. Furthermore, they are also the strong proponents of dialogue and understanding between cultures and communities. A web-based author, Shafaat as well contributes to various Islamic topics. His opinions on the Shari'ah punishment for apostasy and adultery violate the ancient scholarly consensus on these issues.
