Roland Muller

Roland Müller (b. 1956 in Canada) is a historian and evangelical minister whose work since the early 1980s has focused on cross cultural communication between the west and the Arab world. He is a teacher at Gateway Center for Cross-Cultural Service and the author of several books and papers. Between 1978 and 2003 he served as an evangelical missionary in several countries in the Arabian Peninsula. He and his wife are honorary members of several Arab families as well as the Darawsha, a sub-group of the Howitat Bedouin tribe.
In 2000 his book Honor & Shame, Unlocking the Door Muller introduced a model of worldview that was built on guilt, shame and fear. His basic premise is that true Biblical worldview does not exist. Rather the Bible speaks into all worldviews. As a result, Christians around the world can retain much of their ethnic identity and still be faithful followers of Jesus. He argues that much of what is being touted as Christian or Biblical worldview is really evangelical American worldview. He claims that there are many worldviews expressed through the authors of the Bible, including Jewish, Persian, Hellenistic and Roman worldviews. Rather than trying to formulate what a Christian worldview is, Müller teachers that the Bible presents us with three basic worldviews: Edenic, Sin-based and Heavenly. He teaches that all mankind currently is under the influence of sin. Adam and Eve experienced guilt, shame and fear when they sinned (before they were judged). Using these three as his basic building blocks, Müller develops a case for accepting the secular sociological terms of guilt-based, shame-based and fear-based worldviews. Müller’s work is significant in that he tries to bridge the gap between secular models of worldview and the Bible.
Over 15,000 copies of the first edition of Honor and Shame were positively received by evangelicals in many countries, especially Europe and Asia. Honor and Shame was listed in the top fifteen books about Islam by the Paul C. Galvin Library, Illinois Institute of Technology. Phil Parshall an SIM missionary from Manila Philippines commented: “Roland Muller has great insights that make the task of Muslim evangelism more productive. This book is very relevant to non-Arab Muslim (and non-Muslim) cultures as well.”[] In 2006 the book Honor and Shame was included in Roland Müller’s new title: The Messenger, the Message and the Community. The first edition of this book quickly sold out and a new revised edition is expected in 2009.
Müller’s published books include Missionary Leadership by Motivation and Communication (2000) Missions: The Next Generation (2003) Tools for Muslim Evangelism (2000), The Man from Gadara (2000,2003) Honor and Shame: Unlocking the door (2000) and The Messenger, the Message and the Community (2006).

Muller writes and teaches about biblical Christianity and culture (including contextualization), communicating biblical Christianity, church-planting, cross-cultural Christian theology, worldview and Islam. He lives in Canada with his wife and family.
