Yousry Mansour
Backed by his Bachelor degree of Arts in Cinema Directing from the Higher Institute of Cinema in Egypt (1977-1981) and his training on Audio Visual Technology in Japan (1987-1988), and having more than 12 years working experience in film and video production in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Japan, Yousry is very competent as a film director, writer and video cameraman.
Yousry is determined to take his place in the emerging film movement in Singapore, and his commitment towards cinema as his career is unbargainable.
In 2007, he wrote, directed and produced his short fiction film Look at me with financial support of the Singapore Film Commission.
He wrote a book titled The Cinema of China published by Abu Dhabi Culture and Heritage Foundation in 2007.
His love affair with performing arts dated back to his Secondary School days when he joined The Drama Club in his school, and winning numerous awards in drama and acting. He then discovered that his real love is for film and to be behind the camera, not in front of it. For 4 years, he was at The Higher Institute of Cinema at The Academy of Arts in Egypt, taking his Bachelor degree in Cinema Directing.
During the course of study, Yousry was trained in film directing by some of Egypt’s internationally acclaimed film directors like Youssef Chahine (Winner of Cannes Golden Palm and Berlin’s Silver Bear). Yousry has also been apprenticed in the hands of other filmmakers in the lucrative Egyptian cinema (35 mm production), when he worked as a free-lance Assistant Film Director with a number of the Egyptian film directors: Mohamed Khan, Sameer Saif, Mohamed Shibl, Atef Salem, Ahmed Kamel Moursi and Hisham Abou Elnasr.
Yousry is one of the founding members of “The 7th Art” group in Alexandria, Egypt which was responsible for many activities from printing a bi-monthly magazine, production of independent films, weekly shows of art-house movies and film seminars. Yousry was selected as a Member of The Jury Committee for Alexandria International Film Festival in 1983.
Being a member of The Egyptian Cinema Professions Syndicate, Yousry continued his career by working in Centre for Educational Technology to produce educational and documentary films on health and medical research. During that period, Yousry produced many films in 16 mm format and U-matic video for different clients. Among those clients are: Egypt’s Ministry of Health, University of Cairo, Abourrish Children’s Hospital and Pharmaceutical companies.
He has also became an active member of the Egyptian Film Critics Association “EFCA” and continues writing various articles on film for different magazines and newspapers in Egypt.
Yousry has produced and directed a number of video programs for JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) in Cairo. He went on to further his study on educational audio visual programs after he completed a course in Audio Visual Technology in Japan, JICA’s Okinawa International Centre.
Yousry took a full swing into educational video production when joined The Royal Commission’s Jubail Industrial College in Saudi Arabia as a Video Producer. During his work at JIC, he conducted community courses on Audio Visual Technology and Video for Education, translated from English into Arabic and edited two training manuals (Audio Visual Technology & Video for education). Besides his main work as a Producer & director of many educational and training video programs, he also produced and directed 3 documentary films during his stay in Saudi Arabia, namely: JIC - Education Tent, BETEC- Special Learning Program, and Desert Drummers.
As a result of the first gulf war in Middle East, Yousry had to join his family in Singapore and for reasons of economical survival, he had to work in a different industry in Singapore for almost 10 years.
During that period, Yousry continues to use his talents and experience as a filmmaker whenever the opportunity arises. He then continued to produce & directed a corporate video for his previous employer: Tour East. He also directed a video film for the School of Business at Temasek Polytechnic titled: “Good Times, Great Life”.
