The Sailing Association at UVA
The Sailing Association at UVA is a student run club sport that participates in racing, recreational sailing, and social events. The organization is open to all University of Virginia students with any level of sailing experience. The club is a member of the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association.
History
The Sailing Association at the University of Virginia was founded in the 1970's. It first held its practices on Lake Monticello before moving to Lake Anna, where it currently practices today. The Association's current fleet consists of nine Collegiate FJs, one Hobie 16, and two Carolina Skiffs.
Competition
The competitive racing teams of the Association compete in the Mid Atlantic Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (MAISA). The team has qualified for the National Championship multiple times, placing 13th in the most recent National Championship regatta. Their final season ranking for the Spring 2013 sailing season included an MAISA Club Rank of 2nd and an overall MAISA Rank of 7th, as well as a National Rank of 18th according to the 2013 Sailing World Coed Fleet Racing Rankings. The club competes in various states and competitions including the Jefferson Cup, Colony Cup, and Riley Cup, as well as many others.
Non-Competitive Activities
The Sailing Association holds a "lakeday" every Saturday which all University of Virginia students are allowed to attend. The "lakeday" allows for those who are unsure of their desire to participate in the Association to test out the sport. The team also has social events throughout the year. Regular parties, camping trips, movie nights, tailgates, and an annual ski trip are organized by the Association.
Funding
The team is a non-profit organization funded through member dues, the University of Virginia Student Activities Fund, and donations. The current cost of membership is $100 per semester or $160 for the year, and the cost of attending a singular lakeday is $10. Membership dues include access to team boats, lakedays, transportation and housing at competitions, and participation in the team's social activities.
