Career
Terry was born and educated in London, England. He joined Marlborough Fine Art, London in 1961 and helped organise exhibitions by, among others, Henry Moore (1961), Oskar Kokoschka (1962), Frank Auerbach (1965/1967/1971), Sidney Nolan (1965), and Francis BaCon (1967) along with loaned exhibitions by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1963), Lyonel Feininger (1968), Paul Nash (1965), Gustave Klimt (1965), Edvard Munch (1965), Emil Nolde (1966), Mark Rothko(1963) and others. Terry was chief technician at Art Basel from 1964-1966, and in 1967 took part in art fairs in Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Düsseldorf.
Since 1970, Terry has been invited to install many solo exhibitions including Lynn Chadwick (1969) Gallerie Withofs, Brussels; Barbara Hepworth (1970-1), Arts Council of England travelling exhibition at Exeter College; ‘Francis Bacon: Rétrospective’ (1971) at the Grand Palais, Paris; and Thomas Phillips (1975) at the Hague.
In 1973 Terry left Marlborough Fine Arts to form Fine Art Services to look after private clients in London’s leading art galleries including: Waddington Galleries, Redfern Gallery, Fischer Galleries, Piccadilly Fine Art Galleries, and Agnews Gallery.
In 1974 he was invited to assist in the hang of Francis Bacon’s exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and Sidney Nolan’s 1975 exhibition in Venice. Soon after, he became Nolan’s assistant for his Australian retrospective and later Bacon’s assistant while he worked at the Claude Bernard Gallery in Paris.
In 1976 Terry was invited to contribute to the first exhibition for the National Gallery of Australia, entitled ‘Genesis of a Gallery’. Though he moved back to London after the show’s year tour, he continued to work for the gallery as a consultant.
Upon his return to London, Terry sold Fine Art Services and started a private gallery in his country home, exhibiting an array of British and international artists. He was also invited to help the Newbury Spring Festival for Music and started the Sherborne School Gallery with the idea of bringing art to schools in the surrounding area.
In 1983, Terry set up the DM Gallery on Dover Street, specialising in contemporary Australian art. At the end of the gallery lease, he joined Waddington Graphics, Ltd. (now Alan Cristea Gallery) and in 1996 set up Timothy Taylor Gallery to which he was appointed Director in 1998 and Partner in 2003.
