Tareef Hayat Khan (Bangla: তারিফ হায়াত খান) is a Bangladeshi‑born architect, academic, researcher, author, and musician. He is an Associate Professor of the Practice in the School of Architecture at Prairie View A&M University in Texas, United States. His work spans architectural design, housing transformation research, interdisciplinary pedagogy, and South Asian classical and contemporary music performance.

Early life and education

Tareef Hayat Khan was born into a prominent cultural and musical family in Dhaka, Bangladesh. His father, Mobarak Hossain Khan, was a noted musicologist and former Director General of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, and his mother, Fauzia Yasmin, was a respected vocal artist and professor of Bangla literature. He is the grandson of Ustad Ayet Ali Khan.

He completed his Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), followed by a Master of Architecture (M.Arch) and a Master’s in Artificial Intelligence (M.A.I) from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium, and a Ph.D. in Architecture from the University of Hong Kong.

Academic career

Khan began his teaching career at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) in Dhaka in 1996. He later taught at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and served as a visiting lecturer at the University of Hong Kong and Zhejiang University in China. He then joined Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Johor Bahru before moving to the United States in 2018 to teach at Prairie View A&M University, where he mentors undergraduate and graduate students in architecture and supervises theses in design and research.

Research and publications

Khan’s research focuses on housing transformation, architectural heritage, educational methodology, and cultural influences in architecture.

Khan is a trained musician with grounding in tabla from Chhayanaut and sarode under Ustad Shahadat Hossain Khan. He performs and teaches music internationally.
