Prof. Dr. M.D. Ray

Prof. Dr. M.D. Ray (born 1 February 1971) is an Indian author and surgical oncologist who designed five oncological surgical techniques adopted internationally and patented five surgical oncology instruments. He is the author of 36 books.

Life and career

Ray was born in West Bengal, India. He holds an MBBS from Medical College, Kolkata, West Bengal, and a master's degree in surgery (MS) from Army Hospital (R&R), Delhi University. He completed a senior research fellowship under ICMR, New Delhi. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), Glasgow, UK, and holds a PhD in Clinico Molecular Oncology from AIIMS, New Delhi.

He is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He is currently Professor of Surgical Oncology at AIIMS, New Delhi.

Ray served in the Indian Army for more than a decade. He led a medical team as Officer Commanding in Operation Vijay during the Kargil War in 1999. He served at the Army Hospital as a senior research fellow in Oncosurgery under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and also served at the Army College of Medical Sciences and Base Hospital, Delhi. Ray is a cancer surgeon specializing in so-called 'incurable metastatic cancers' known as Peritoneal Surface Malignancies and intra-abdominal chemotherapy, including HIPEC, PIPAC, and Robotic Onco Surgery. He is an international speaker in the field of cancer surgery and an active researcher in molecular oncology. He is also a teacher and examiner for cancer surgery super-specialty students. He has performed more than 15,000 complex oncological surgeries and has been recognized as ‘Master of Masters’ in complex cancer surgeries.

Ray is an active member of notable national and international cancer research projects. He is a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS) and the Association of Surgeons of India (FAIS).

He is currently Professor of Surgical Oncology at AIIMS, New Delhi. The institution has patented five of his instruments for major abdominal surgeries.

Ray runs an NGO named Universal Unity Trust for cancer prevention. As a social activist, he is actively involved in cancer awareness programs across the country to prevent India from becoming the Cancer Capital by 2040, through various government projects and Universal Unity Trust. He has been featured in the Indian and Limca Book of Records.

He is a graded artist in tabla at All India Radio and represented India in Peru on the occasion of Republic Day 2024 through ICCR, Government of India. He is also a regular broadcaster for cancer awareness on Akashvani All India Radio.

He represented India in Germany for Indo-German collaborative research on robotics and AI in oncological surgery, led by the Director of AIIMS, Delhi.

The Director of AIIMS, Delhi, recommended him for the Padma Awards, not only as an outstanding cancer surgeon and researcher, but also as a social activist, artist, and author in the fields of medicine and social service.
