Regina Bateson

Regina Anne Bateson is an American academic, former public servant, and candidate for Congress in California’s 4th Congressional District. She is a member of the Democratic Party.

On April 27, 2017, Bateson declared her candidacy for the Democratic party primary in the election for United States Congress; the winner of the primary will challenge incumbent Tom McClintock (R-Elk Grove). Bateson’s campaign has been covered by NPR, the Sacramento Bee, and the Los Angeles Times.

In her first quarter as a candidate, Bateson raised $95,292.78.

Early life and education

Bateson was raised in Roseville, California and graduated from Granite Bay High School in 2000. She earned her B.A. in history from Stanford University in 2004.

Upon her graduation from Stanford, Bateson joined the U.S. Foreign Service. She served as a consular officer at the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City from 2004 to 2006.

In 2013, Bateson earned her Doctorate (Ph.D) in Political Science from Yale University, where she was a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow.

Academic career

Bateson has been an Assistant Professor of Political Science at MIT since 2013. Her research focuses on the political consequences of violence, including civil wars and crime.

In 2013, Bateson won the American Political Science Association’s (APSA) Heinz I. Eulau Award. for "for the best article published in the American Political Science Review in the previous year.," the paper   “Crime Victimization and Political Participation,”  In 2014, Bateson won APSA’s Gabriel A. Almond Award or her doctoral dissertation “Order and Violence in Postwar Guatemala.” . In 2016, Bateson won the Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award from MIT’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program. On August 30, 2017, NPR reported (and Bateson tweeted) that she had left the tenure track to run for congress.
