Red Martian (Band)

Red Martian is an American punk rock, new wave, shoegaze band originally formed in 1999 by Stephen Jones, Ted Uhlemann, and Jordan Zadwick. The lineup has changed over the years and the band currently resides in Seattle, WA.

Early History

The band was formed by three members of the acclaimed Dallas, TX based punk band The visitors in 1999 after breaking away from vocalist Benjie Bollox due to creative differences in their direction. Shortly after, Jones received a letter from Bollox's attorney stating that he owned full and complete rights to The Visitors name and to stop using it. After consulting with their label, Mind Kontrol Records, the band name was changed to Red Martian. The name was selected by Jones after reading an article AbOUT NASA's strategies on the initial colonization of Mars. Within months, Jones relocated to Seattle, WA with Uhlemann and Zadwick remaining in Dallas, TX. Jones would write new material and share it with Zadwick to write the drum parts. Subsequently, shows would be scheduled and the band would do tours.

Deny Authority

In late December 1999 through early 2000, Red Martian released a short 7 track album titled Automaton and embarked on A Tour through mid-America promoting new material that would be released in an upcoming album titled Deny Authority. The album was a complete change stylistically from later works by The Visitors, echoing varying influences from 7 Seconds, Dead Kennedys, and The Cure and lyrically promoting a positive but serious message of change and introspection. Shortly after the tour, the band entered the studio to record the album in Fort Worth, TX. Jones then returned to Seattle, WA and worked on the final mix and master of the album before release. It consisted of 13 tracks:

  1. Deny Authority
  2. Book of Fiction
  3. Blackout
  4. Technology Gone Bad
  5. Refund
  6. Remember (Bread & Water)
  7. In My Country
  8. Thompson Hill
  9. How Do You Think You'd Feel (7 Seconds)
  10. Automaton
  11. Tragic Vision
  12. Old Jacks Farm
  13. The Cry

The album featured artwork by Tracy Widdess and received positive reviews from critics internationally.
