Nautischer Wachoffizier (NWO)

The Nautischer Wachoffizier (NWO) is a German maritime qualification corresponding to an officer in charge of a navigational watch (OICNW). It certifies that the holder is qualified to take responsibility for the safe navigation of a vessel during a watch in accordance with international maritime standards.

The legal basis of the NWO qualification is provided by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), as implemented in German maritime law.

In Germany, certification is administered by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) under national regulations implementing the STCW Convention.

Scope

The NWO qualification applies to seagoing vessels and authorizes the holder to act as an officer in charge of a navigational watch on the bridge.

This includes responsibility for:

  • safe navigation of the vessel
  • watchkeeping duties
  • compliance with International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs)
  • monitoring of navigational equipment

Requirements

Applicants for the NWO qualification must demonstrate:

  • completion of approved maritime training programs
  • seagoing service as part of officer training
  • knowledge of navigation, meteorology, and ship handling
  • competence in watchkeeping and safety procedures

Training and certification requirements follow STCW standards.

Examination

Assessment for the NWO qualification includes theoretical and practical components, typically covering:

  • navigation and voyage planning
  • radar and electronic navigation systems
  • bridge resource management
  • maritime law and safety

Assessment is carried out as part of approved training programs and examinations.

Administration

The NWO qualification is issued by the competent German maritime authorities, primarily the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH).

Certificates are internationally recognized under the STCW Convention.

Position in the German certification system

The NWO qualification is part of the professional maritime officer training system and is distinct from recreational boating certificates such as the Sportbootführerschein See.

It represents an entry-level officer qualification and forms the basis for further advancement to higher maritime certificates of competence.
