NWO500
The NWO 500, formally Nautischer Wachoffizier in der küstennahen Fahrt, is a German certificate of competency for service as officer in charge of a navigational watch on seagoing ships of less than 500 gross tonnage engaged on near-coastal voyages. It forms part of the German system of maritime professional qualifications and is issued under the Seeleute-Befähigungsverordnung (See-BV).
Legal basis
The legal basis of the NWO 500 is the German Seeleute-Befähigungsverordnung (See-BV), which implements the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). Under section 29 of the ordinance, specific certificates of competency are provided for the nautical service on ships of less than 500 gross tonnage in near-coastal voyages.
The qualification corresponds to service on the operational level in near-coastal voyages under STCW regulation II/3.
Scope
The NWO 500 applies to seagoing ships with a gross tonnage of less than 500 engaged on near-coastal voyages. It authorizes the holder to serve as officer in charge of a navigational watch within that limited trading area and tonnage range.
It is distinct from the unrestricted Nautischer Wachoffizier (NWO), which applies to broader categories of seagoing vessels.
Requirements
Applicants for the NWO 500 must meet the requirements laid down in the See-BV. These include approved training, seagoing service, and proof of the competencies required for nautical watchkeeping in near-coastal service.
BSH-published training guidelines also refer to a prescribed practical training and seagoing service period as a nautical officer's assistant for the acquisition of the NWO 500 certificate.
Examination
The qualification is obtained under the examination and certification system established by the See-BV. The requirements include professional training and assessment of the competencies needed for bridge watchkeeping, navigation, ship handling, safety, and related operational duties.
Administration
The NWO 500 is issued and administrated within the German maritime certification system under the supervision of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH). BSH forms for the extension of validity list the Nautischer Wachoffizier küstennahe Fahrt (NWO 500) as a current certificate category.
Position in the German certification system
The NWO 500 is part of the professional maritime qualification framework and is distinct from recreational boating certificates such as the Sportbootführerschein See, the Sportseeschifferschein, or the Sporthochseeschifferschein.
Within the professional system, it represents a limited certificate for near-coastal voyages on ships under 500 gross tonnage and is closely related to the corresponding master-level certificate NK 500.
