Luke Wertz

Luke Wertz (born September 20, 1985 in Longmont, Colorado) is a pitcher for the Williamsport Crosscutters. He played collegiately for Nebraska.

High School

Luke went to Ponderosa High School in Colorado. He went 14-8 with 190 strikeouts in 140 innings during his high school career. He earned all-conference honors as a sophomore and a senior and honorable-mention all-state honors as a junior and senior. He was rated the No. 5 high school prospect in Colorado by Baseball America in 2004.

Nebraska

Luke was 1 of the few true freshman on the 2005 College World Series team going 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 10 appearances (18.1 innings). In his sophomore year he went 1-0 with a save and a 3.00 ERA in 12 appearances. He missed 6 weeks because of a shoulder injury before returning to pitch in relief in the Big 12 title game on May 28. He got more action in his junior year going 4-1 with a 2.98 ERA in 60.1 innings. On June 8, Luke was drafted in the 13th round by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft.

Minor League

Luke made his professional debut 2 weeks after he was drafted on June 21 with the Crosscutters in The New York - Penn League. Luke won the game ironically playing his college teammate, Tony Watson, who was drafted on the same day. He is 1-0 with a save and 9 strikeouts in 3 games. He is on the 7 Day Disabled List.
