Khalid Cassam
Khalid Cassam is a Mozambican agronomist, environmental scientist, and prominent sports administrator. He is widely recognized for his dual career paths: serving as the National Project Coordinator and pesticide management specialist for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Mozambique, and holding the presidency of Zone VI within the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB). Additionally, Cassam serves as a public civil spokesperson representing the interests of the Mozambican Muslim community during national discourse on public safety.
Professional and environmental career
Cassam has maintained a long career within the public agricultural sector of Mozambique. He historically served as the Head of the Agrochemical Registration and Control Section under the Ministry of Agriculture, situated at the Pavilhão Novo in Maputo. In this capacity, he functioned as Mozambique's Designated National Authority for the Rotterdam Convention, representing the state during strategic planning workshops across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.
As the National Project Coordinator for the FAO, Cassam has directed major environmental sanitation projects, overseeing the inventory, collection, safe re-packing, and elimination of obsolete, highly hazardous pesticides (HHPs) throughout major agricultural transit zones such as Chimoio in the Manica Province. He has been a strong advocate for engaging local agrarian communities to phase out toxic agricultural chemicals, coordinating policy drafting with regional SADC environmental frameworks to prevent toxic asset accumulation.
Sports administration
Parallel to his scientific background, Cassam is a significant figure in continental African sports governance. He initially built his profile within national athletic systems as a key official for the Mozambique Volleyball Federation (). In 2015, he operated as a chief delegate for the African Confederation of Volleyball, directing the structural review of the "African Dream Project" — a continental program financed to discover young sports talent across southern nations, including Namibia.
Cassam subsequently ascended to the presidency of CAVB Zone VI, governing volleyball and beach volleyball development across Southern Africa. His administrative programs received high praise from Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi following the successful training and competitive regional rise of Mozambique's national beach volleyball squads.
Community and public advocacy
Cassam acts as a prominent public voice and spokesperson for the Muslim community of Mozambique. Following public concern surrounding regional security issues, including the jihadist insurgency and a series of high-profile kidnappings targeting the business class in urban areas, Cassam has utilized major media platforms to engage with the government.
During nationwide assemblies marking the end of Ramadan, Cassam has publicly challenged the Ministry of the Interior and national security apparatuses to reinforce law enforcement efficiency, asserting that civic and national economic stability depends strictly on the state's capacity to protect its people from fear and violence.
