John William Horn
John William Horn Ph.D., (b. October 12, 1967) in Medicine Lodge, Kansas is an American entrepreneur and technologist. He is the Founder and CEO of Axis Open Source Corporation and Interstate Software LLC, a major enterprise Software company.
Early life
Home was a farm in the Kansas/Oklahoma border area, populated mostly by middle class German Americans. Horn, one of eleven children, remembers his loving and supportive parents, who worked hard to teach him common sense and strong moral values. Dr. Horn was a "gifted" student who excelled academically and athletically. Later in life he accepted both athletic and academic scholarships in college to further his education.
Personal life
Dr. Horn lives in Medford, Oklahoma, with his second wife, Jenny, and sons, Kodiak and Sage.
Career
Dr. Horn began programming in 1983, on early Apple computers and Radio Shack TRS-80's, while attending high school in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Around 1992, while working in the oilfields of western Kansas, he purchased a Commodore 64/128. Later that year, he resumed programming and began to build and repair computer systems professionally. While studying at Wichita State University in 1994, he began using linux and building database driven websites. All through the 1990's, Dr. Horn worked his way through college in Wichita, Kansas, while starting several small businesses, including an internet service provider. In 1999, he founded Interstate Software LLC., followed in 2003 by Axis Open Source Corporation. Axis Open Source Corporation was the first Gold Level MySQL AB and SuSE Linux (Novell Linux) Certified training center in North America. As an Open Source Software Pioneer, Dr. Horn brought large-scale LAMP (Linux, Apache HTTP Server, MySQL and PHP) training to the United States. His efforts to forge alliances between many Open Source Companies brought him widespread recognition in the Open Source Community. Dr. Horn is also known for his efforts to spread RAD (Rapid Application Development) techniques using Open Source Software among web developers. He is the author of “MySQL Essential Skills”, McGraw-Hill Osbourne, July 2004; “MySQL Considerations”, “Pros and Cons of MySQL Table Types”, Developer.com 2003; and authored articles various professional journals, including “Simplifying Linux Management”, Eweek July 12, 2004, and "Linux, remember your training", SearchOpenSource.com, October 18, 2004. He is a graduate of Wichita State University and Faith Bible College.
