Greenland North Dockyard
Greenland North Dockyard, also known as "Greenland Dock" and "Licensed Victualler's Dock", was in Rotherhithe on the River Thames, London, at the north side of the entrance lock to Greenland Dock. It is thought to date from AbOUT 1660.
Sir Giles Howland an early member of the East India Company bought the land and it was during the time of his son John Howland, that the north dry dock was built. It was leased to Abraham Wells of Deptford and a successor of his, Richard Wells built the first ship that can be positively identified as having been built here, the Tonqueen, an East Indiaman of 1681. The first warship was the 42 gun HMS Winchester of 1698.
