The Five Mile Rivalry between the Old Dominion Monarchs and the Norfolk State State Spartans is a match-up between two public universities, Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University, in Virginia. The two schools, as the name of the rivalry suggests, are just five miles apart within the city of Norfolk. Old Dominion is a member of Conference USA, part of the FBS, while Norfolk State is a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in the FCS. ODU was formerly an FCS team as part of the Colonial Athletic Association until the 2012 season. The football series began in 2011 and has been played a total of 2 times as of 2013.
History
ODU and Norfolk State played for the first time on November 26, 2011 in the first round of the FCS playoffs which resulted in a 35-18 Monarch win. Norfolk State and ODU announced a new deal for a home and away series in 2013 and 2015 to help fill out open game dates for ODU's transition to the FBS.
