Missouri–Texas A&M football rivalry

The Missouri–Texas A&M football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Missouri Tigers and the Texas A&M Aggies. Although Missouri and Texas A&M became in the same conference when the Big Eight Conference and the Southwest Conference merged to form the Big 12 Conference in 1996, the rivalry kicked off when the two Big 12 members announced, in 2011, their move to the SEC which would take place the next year (2012). The Tigers and the Aggies have played 14 times against each other and is now in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Texas A&M currently leads the series against Missouri, 8–6.

History

Texas A&M lead Missouri 4–0 before the two joined the Big 12 Conference in 1996 and have been in the same conference ever since. However, the two teams have never been in the same division of a conference, either the Big 12 (when it had North and South divisions) or the SEC (East and West divisions).

BIG 12 Conference (1996–2011)

Missouri and Texas A&M joined the Big 12 Conference when Missouri's conference, the Big Eight and Texas A&M's conference, the Southwest both merged in 1996. Many factors lead to the merged, like when the University of Arkansas moved from the Southwest to the Southeastern Conference and changes in television contracts which lead to many conference realignment. The Big Eight and the Southwest conferences saw potential financially from an alliance to negotiate television deals. The members of the Big Eight including Missouri and four Texas schools including Texas A&M all joined to create the Big 12 Conference.

Missouri was in the North division and Texas A&M was in the South division of the Big 12. Together played eight times while in the Big 12 until trouble started to rumble through the conference in 2010 as reports speculated that the Big 12 Conference was on the verge of dissolution. In February, reports stated the desire by the Pac-10 to expand the conference. The article said that the only school that "moved the needle" financially for the Pac-10 was Texas. After the Big 12 lost two members, Colorado and Nebraska in 2011, both Missouri and Texas A&M accepted invites from the SEC to join the conference due to the uncertain future of the Big 12 and the new Longhorn Network.

Southeastern Conference (2012–present)

Missouri and Texas A&M officially joined the SEC on July 1, 2012. Missouri is placed in the East division of the SEC and Texas A&M is in the West division. The teams of the SEC have a permanent inter-divisional opponent, where a team from the East division and a West division will played annually which was added for traditional rivalries like the Alabama–Tennessee rivalry to continue annually despite not being in the same division. When Missouri and Texas A&M joined the conference they were each other's permanent inter-divisional opponent, so it wouldn't alter any other team rivalries of the conference. After the 2013 season, Missouri and Texas A&M permanent cross-division rivalry discontinued and Missouri's new permanent cross-division rival will be with Arkansas due to the proximity of the two universities, which will start in 2014. This leaves Texas A&M and South Carolina Gamecocks to be each other's new inter-divisional rivals.

Despite Missouri and Texas A&M not playing annually anymore because of not being cross-division rivals, it has been announced that the Tigers and the Aggies will meet up again for the 2014 and the 2021 seasons.
