2014 FC Buffalo season

The 2014 FC Buffalo season was the fifth season of competitive soccer for the club. The team competed in the new Great Lakes East Conference of the Midwest Region of the National Premier Soccer League, which is one of two fourth-division soccer leagues in the United States.

Season overview

May

Prior to the season it was announced that FC Buffalo move their 2014 home games from All-High Stadium to Canisius College's Demske Sports Complex. The new venue is smaller but still adequate for the Wolves needs and has no grid-iron football lines on the field. The team is also celebrating their fifth year of operation by selling season ticket scarves with the modified team slogan "Five Our City." FC Buffalo opened their season in Erie on 16 May, beating their longtime rivals 4-2 to claim the clubs first ever win in Erie. Star midfielder and University at Buffalo product Russell Cicerone scored twice to earn national recognition as the National Premier Soccer League Player of the Week for the first week of the 2014 season. The club finished the month with a home draw to AFC Cleveland and an away loss to the Indiana Fire, both games in which the Blitzers lead 1-0 before conceding late goals.

June

The club opened the month with a 2–1 home defeat against Erie. Kendall McFayden and Jake Rinow made their 2014 debut with FC Buffalo in the loss. The club's fifth game of the 2014 campaign, a home match against Rust Belt Derby rivals Detroit City FC, was postponed due to a thunderstorm after 23:31 minutes of play. The match has been rescheduled to Wednesday, July 9, 2014. On July 20, manager Brendan Murphy added two new players to the first team. Niagara goalkeeper Steven Casey, and St. Lawrence midfielder Sam DeMello. The roster additions were credited to the congested schedule FC Buffalo faces. The club will play 10 matches in 30 days starting with a Sunday fixture against Fort Pitt on July 22. The club ended the month of June with four straight losses including back to back defeats to Fort Pitt, 5–2 and 4–0.

July

FC Buffalo began the month with a July 3 shutout loss against Erie, a game which saw Russell Cicerone receive a straight red card for dissent. Cicerone would miss the next game, another loss to Fort Pitt. This marked the clubs sixth loss in a row. FC Buffalo ended its three game series with Fort Pitt with a record of 0–0–3, being outscored 12–3. In the club's penultimate game of the season, FC Buffalo secured its first ever win over NPSL powerhouse Detroit City FC thanks to a Marcus Hanson brace.
