Woodsmen Australian Football Club
|
The Woodsmen Australian Football Club was founded in 2008 by a group of players wishing to create their own senior club to participate in the AFLQ Competition on Friday nights, primarily as a means to offer an opportunity for players to continue their football careers without having to play on Saturday. This caters for older players with families, as well as younger players with other weekend commitments. The Woodsmen entered the South East Queensland Division 3 Central competition for their inaugural season in 2009. In a year which involved many struggles for a new club in relation to funding, player availability and finding a home ground and training facility, 2009 was a memorable one. The Jimboomba Redbacks had remained undefeated throughout the season and went into the finals as deservedly hot favourites, however the Woodsmen had galvanised themselves and come together as a group in the closing stages of the season and went on to defeat the Redbacks twice in the finals series to record a memorable premiership win in their first season. In 2010 the Woodsmen were again there at the pointy end of the season, but this time the Redbacks had their revenge defeating the Woodsmen in the Grand Final. In 2011 and 2012, the Woodsmen were defeated Preliminary Finalists and in 2013 the Woodsmen were knocked out in extra time in the elimination final, the club's lowest finish in 5 completed seasons. However, the Woodsmen were ready to bounce back in 2014. With a rejuvenated playing list, the Woodsmen completed an historic undefeated Premiership Season in 2014, easily defeating Wynnum in the decider by 8 goals. 2009 * PREMIERS * Captain - Sean Toohey * Best & Fairest - Gareth Hardy * Leading Goalkicker - Dean Nipperess * Coach - William Pierce * President - Laurie Nipperess * League Best & Fairest Winner - Adam Peel 2010 * Runners-up * Captain - Sean Toohey * Best & Fairest - Jake Jameson * Leading Goalkicker - Adam Gillespie * Coach - William Pierce * President - Laurie Nipperess 2011 * 3rd * Captain - Jake Jameson * Best & Fairest - Kiran Verma * Leading Goalkicker - Brad Williams * Coach - William Pierce * President - Laurie Nipperess 2012 * 3rd * Captain - Mark Ezzy * Best & Fairest - David Green * Leading Goalkicker - Jay Baker * Coach - Scott Keane * President - Laurie Nipperess 2013 * 4th * Captain - Sean Toohey * Best & Fairest - Jay Baker * Leading Goalkicker - Andrew Thomson / Sean Toohey * Coach - Scott Keane * President - Andrew Thomson 2014 * PREMIERS * Captain - Sean Toohey * Best & Fairest (Nipperess Medal) - Reid Dobson * Leading Goalkicker - Jay Baker * Coach - Scott Keane * President - Andrew Thomson 50 GAMES * David Green * Kiran Verma * Greg Matthews * Jeffson Fehr-Smith * Andrew Thomson * Tim Green * Darcy McEwen * Sean Toohey
