Windy Lampson

Born in Goldsboro, NC, Virginia Winters Lampson is an award-winning, internationally recognized American artist. She is best known for painting still-life and portrait images, often capturing the intricate compositions and colors of reflections. In addition, Windy Lampson deviates from painting the traditional portrait, instead capturing moments as they happen. This candid approach to portrait painting allows the viewer to develop stories and scenarios about what is happening within that particular moment in time. Apart from these paintings, she also works as a commissioned portrait artist, and currently receives commissioned work from clients worldwide.

Early Career
Lampson grew an interest in creating art as a high school student at Wayne Country Day School in Goldsboro after winning a "Best in Show" award. It was at this time that she decided to study art in college.

In 1998, Lampson was admitted into East Carolina University, where she worked toward two majors: Art, with a concentration in painting, and Art Education. The classes she took and the professors she studied under helped to develop her personal style she possesses today.

While she was a student, Lampson experimented with different methods of oil painting, and had a fascination with the effects of turpenoid on oil paint. Many of her early works feature young ballerina figures and are manipulated with turpenoid, giving the finished product a worn appearance.

She tried many other methods of painting, but it was the training of professor Paul Hartley that helped her achieve a milestone in composition. She concluded that, with her works, the subject is not the main idea of a painting, nor is there necessarily any political or symbolic meaning behind what is viewed. Instead, the composition of how the objects are arranged on canvas is the main purpose. Lampson dedicated her studies to balance, line quality, and eye movement while still using representative subjects. Many of these characteristics are subtle, and often enjoyed sub-consciously. However, each of Lampson's paintings employs this idea.

Upon graduating with a dual degree, Lampson applied for, and was accepted into, East Carolina University's Master of Fine Arts program. It was during these years that she honed in on painting figures.

Professional Career
Lampson graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree in 2005. After teaching elementary art classes, she decided to paint full time, and is currently recognized in North Carolina as a premiere portrait painter, having received many awards and accepting invitations for solo shows.
