Welching Day

Welching Day (also known as Welcher's Day, and Better Thursday) came about as the direct result of the comic escapades of William Huxtable Jr, Brian D.C. Smith, and David B. Deschamps while in Lethbridge Alberta, Canada.
Welching itself is an ancient term for backing out of ones commitment or responsibility. One who welches on a deal is referred to as a Welcher.
Welching Day was founded as a form of Social Justice, and has even been related to Karmic Doctrine.
The purpose of Welching Day is that anyone that has welched on a deal in the past year must on Welching Day make amends by providing equal compensation to the victim of the welching. This is can be quite fiscally significant to the Welcher and therefore it is the responsibility of the immediate social group to enforce not only the Welcher and/or Welchee.
Welching Day is always the day before Good Friday, hence it sometimes being referred to vulgarily as "Better Thursday". It has no known connection to Easter, any form of Christianity, or any other religion for that matter.
It is not formally regarded as a holiday in Canada even though it has been practiced annually since its founding in 1997. Although founded in Lethbridge Alberta, it has seen more proliferation in British Columbia. It has become a highly anticipated yearly celebration in the East Kooteney region of British Columbia Canada, specifically the town of Cranbrook. It has even spread to several other communities world-wide including Phuket Thailand, and Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. If you celebrate this holiday please be sure to add your community and country to the growing list.
Local television news in Cranbrook (operated by Shaw Cable) covered the holiday on a local events segment in 2005.
The Daily Townsmen newspaper has also run several articles on the popularity and spread of this holiday. (Dates and details to follow).
The two films "The Brothers McMullen" and "Empire Records" are closely tied to the founding of the holiday in that the DVD versions of the films were both tied to the original welching (often referred to as the Alpha Welch). More details are being researched at this time.
The Facebook group dedicated to the spread and enforcement of Welching Day cites the following, "This holiday came about after a certain someone "welched" on something he had agreed upon earlier. Since that day, this holiday is the day that you pay back what you "welched" on during the previous year.".
The Facebook Group is a global group where you can find further information on Welching Day, fellow Welching Day Enthusiasts, and even support for people that are victims of welching. The group is called "Welching Day (Better Thursday)". Membership is open to any that would like further information, or to help the spread of Welching Day.
