Volta Caberet was established in 2005 as a monthly entertainment show in Dublin. The name references the Volta Cinematograph, known as Dublin's first cinema. The series of shows featured the work of writers, directors, musicians and actors who debuted new material to a live audience. The shows had a comedic leaning and developed story lines for a host of characters and themes throughout the run. The shows featured live music and sketch performances combined with recorded video inserts. Volta featured work by David Stone, David Crann, Declan Lynch and Liam Hourican. The show presented original characters such as Felix the Monkey and hosted by fictional Dublin thespian Prionsias O'Ferfaille. The shows regularly parodied known public figures such as Ireland's then Taoiseach (Fianna Fail minister) Bertie Ahern and Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams as well as advertising icon Captain Birdseye. The show also satired popular TV formats such as MTV's Cribs & JackAss. It also previewed a number of comedy videos before their release online. Notably online content includes "Don't interupt me, I didn't interupt you" a satire of Sinn Fein political speak. The series was the development ground for a number of artists who went on to stage further shows in the Dublin Fringe Festival and beyond. Former performers included: the sick and indigent song club, Angelica Santander, Feilmidh Nunan and Jim Roche. On his website liamhourican.com Hourican sights the significance of Volta and his contributors in his comedic development "Dublin Fringe: The Volta Cabaret (2005), An Evening with Prionsias O’Ferfaille (2006), Gerry and the Peace Process (2007)" A core group of Volta members continued to collaborate and successfully participated in RTE's storylands competition in 2010.
