Rutgers Night Live is a sketch show produced by students from Rutgers University. The group premiered its first show at Cabaret Theater during the Fall 2010 semester. Their first series of shows sold out and the group is expected to produce at least one more show during the upcoming school year. Creation and Formation Rutgers Night Live was the brainchild of Rutgers students Dom Nero and Steven Hilger, members of the University's Long-Form Improv Troupe No Diving, which performed monthly out of the Cabaret Theater. Nero and Hilger, along with fellow No Diving members Bryton McGrath, JJ Focaraccio and Ryan Tomczyk offered to combine forces with Rutger's short-form improv group: A 4 Effort, of which McGrath was also a member, along with students that Nero and Hilger met while doing a charity show with the College Avenue Players. Nero and Hilger also recruited stand-up comedians into the cast, creating a wide range of comedy sketches and styles. Production Format Hilger and Nero formatted the show in a manner similar to Saturday Night Live, combining sketch comedy with musical guests and a different host for each series of performances. The first musical guest was Deep Treble. Most of the sketches were written by its creators with additional sketches and material coming from Tomczyk, Sean Newman, Jordan Gochman, and Dina Hashem. Gochman also co-wrote The Medium News Minute with A 4 Effort member John Bender and various Medium staff writers. Nero designed the sound and most of the videos for the first production, while Gochman designed the lighting for the show. Heather Tedesco, Special Events Coordinator for Cabaret Theater, coordinated the production.
