Unixpunx

Currently, the Unixpunx project is officially dead due to lack of participation/interest. (See below)

Unixpunx refers to the Unixpunx.org website that was founded in 1998 by Paul Russo (ex-singer/guitarist of punk band The Unseen and Pinkerton Thugs) as a means to mesh together the ideals of the open source Unix community with grassroots DIY punk/hardcore ideals. With the slogan "counter-culture music, counter-culture operating systems", the site quickly gained in popularity, offering services such as FTP file sharing, IRC communications, Internet broadcast radio, as well as user forums with discussions ranging from the ethics of technology and punk/hardcore to show listings for various local venues. Going into its 8th year, Unixpunx has grown and now has a very large user base from various countries.

Unixpunx Mission Statement

Hacking and punk ethics share many of the same beliefs, both being organized and fueled by a grass roots community. The goal of unixpunx is to provide a niche online for both to reside. Connecting like-minded people allows for the creation of a force for change and shows people an alternative to supporting corporations and organizations who work to take options and rights away. The Unixpunx group feels Electronic Civil Disobedience is something that punks and activists do not utilize enough.

"Don't hate the media, become the media." - Jello Biafra.

Goals

Unixpunx has multiple goals in mind. Its content is provided by the people who use it, with the thought that the more dynamic a site is, the more of a community that is developed. Unixpunx attempts to break down the negative implications that hacking has developed due to the media over the years, while also turning punks on to hacking, and vice versa.

Services

Services, such as the above-mentioned FTP file sharing, are in direct defiance with certain organizations that would rather shut down online music all together rather than work out a favorable agreement to all parties. Unixpunx tries to show that there are a community of musicians that would like their music distributed (with fair compensation) online to as many people as possible; they hope to set an example for some sort of "Music GPL (General Public Licence)", just as the open source software community has.

Unixpunx tries to provide its services as free as possible: only donations are requested.

Current

As of January 14, 2007 the domain of UnixPunx.org expired and was quickly snatched up by a domain parker by the name of Stephen R. Wilson before it could be renewed by the remaining UnixPunx administration.

The only remaining official UnixPunx service is an IRC chatroom located on the EFNet Network.
