Digital property framework

The Digital Property Framework, was created to set open standards for online properties, digital rights, registration processes, rights assignments, title searches, easement certifications, and define digital property itself. These guidelines were established for general use in an open environment. The digital property rights defined here are contrasted to those defined in Digital rights management dealing directly with media content itself. The framework deals with the rights of the collaborative canvas as opposed to the rights of specifically configured content as in intellectual property rights.

Definition of Digital property

Digital property, can be property found in a number of different kinds of spaces from online interactive platforms, to social networking spaces, game spaces, and knowledge representational environments. It can include but is not limited to items such as: static media, applications, services, data sets, web objects, utilities, and areas 3 dimensional online environments.

Discussion:

There are two main categories of digital property:

Static Content Digital Property: This property is content based and static in its configuration. Examples of this are items like film, music, video, and copyrighted text, such a newspapers, books, and magazines.

Dynamic Content Digital Property: This is property that changes over time because of user interaction. Examples of this kind of property are discussion threads, forums, interactive spaces, and the geography of an interactive online environment all constitute property that is dynamic and changing. This type of property has the characteristic that it usually has more than one creator.

Digital Property Rights

Digital Rights: Digital rights define the freedom individuals enjoy to use or transfer the interests they have in digital property - property that is accessible through the use of an electronic and photonic communication or reading devices such as a computer, personal digital assistant (PDA), or cellular telephone. Digital rights management almost entirely is focused on 'static content digital proeperty'. The Digital Property Framework is designed to provide rights management for dynamic content digital property in addition to that of static content digital property.

In the context online property, these rights include a number of rights similar to the rights that a landowner enjoys in connection with the ownership of real property, such as the right to lease the property, the right to exclude others from the property, the right to improve the property, and the right to allow access to the property for specifically defined purposes, among others. Investors in digital property can often purchase or lease these rights from digital property owners as opportunities to generate business revenue.
