UltraStream is an Internet Radio hosting service which has been in operation since 2006. History UltraStream began as a service to users of popular 3D environment Second Life. Originally the service consisted of a few shoutcast installations on a rented server. This steadily increased over time, and eventually migrated to the more advanced IceCast server, and multiple physical machines. Later, the company created its own streaming platform, the SoundBox. This is built around the IceCast server and adds such capabilities as per second listener stats, regional locking via IP address and simple web based management. Today the company uses a number of techniques including redundancy, virtualization and multiple hardware installations at multiple sites, to provide a modern streaming service. Payment Model UltraStream works on a per listener model, offering Internet Radio stations packages which allow them to stream to 50, 100 and 300 concurrent listeners, with higher numbers of listeners available on a bespoke basis. UltraStream is notable for its customer support which includes live MSN chat sessions with customers. It is also notable for significant work in the field of interfaces to audio streams, being one of the first companies to stream audio to the iPhone without the use of an application (i.e. direct from the browser). SoundBox Media Server The SoundBox media server a commercial server appliance developed by UltraStream. It is offered as a hosted web based appliance, and builds on IceCast to offer the following additional features: * Per stream, per day logs of listener hours, and total listener count * Multi - user system with inbuilt permissions * SOAP access to create, edit and delete streams, and carry out core administrative tasks * Geo-lock functionality for all streams In addition, SoundBox 2.0 is currently in development. This promises to extend the feature set of the server significantly, adding in: * Logs by geographic region * Special integration with the iPhone, allowing streams to be listened to live without a streaming application * Replication between server instances * SMS login authentication
