Thomas Bevis cames from a small and uninvolved family. At an early age, he took to several forms of art, focusing on drawing, music, and writing. In his youth, he read horror pulp novels such as those by R. L. Stine, but his tastes evolved as he grew and he soon came to love Stephen King, H. P. Lovecraft, and Richard Matheson. Initially, he tried to focus on music as his main mode of expression. He ran a number of outfits, but a general lack of interest caused the bands to break up almost as soon as they were started. Instead of running and organizing groups, he decided then to stick with solo recording, including the acoustic work Tommy Chaos and the Sacrament of the Silver String and electro-techno MERC. With the lack of music, Tom shifted his attention to his writing. He chose two names to write under, the first being James Stark (derived from guitar hero James Hetfield and character from Stephen King's The Dark Half character George Stark)as a general pseudonym and T.R. Desmond (or Talon Randall Desmond) for works that were more graphic or risque. He shed the false names soon after, however, and took pride in his work. He has complete one collection of short stories and has two novels in progress in addition to a number of screenplays. Writing While working primarily in the horror genre, Bevis likes to test other genres and modes of writing. He often refers to his theme-park centered zombie thriller Thrill Ride his favorite piece, but he refers to his more recent short stories, such as the Lovecraft-influences The Drop and The East Wing of Sanity, the best examples of his writing. He has expiremented with the genres of science fiction, fantasy, and comedy. A western has also been written, but has yet to be distributed. The post-apocalyptic setting has become a favorite theme of Bevis's, and he often finds ways to write it into his stories, though he doesn't use consistent causes of the apocalypse. The causes range from over population of disco to the overly-common nuclear war. Another favorite theme is the circus, though usually only in icons of the circus, such as the clown or the big-top tent. Music Bevis was a dedicated musician, but found numerous difficulties along the road. He quickly took to guitar and bass, and was involved with several musical outfits. After the rapid disintegration of his project, Black Illusion, Bevis took the moniker Tommy Chaos and aspired to become a record producer for a short while, but decided that writing was his true calling. The shifting of tastes and ideas often match between his music and his writing. For example, in his lyric-writing, the apocalypse or life after the apocalypse is a common theme, as is in his short-story writing. More recently, his fiction writing has taken a turn into the banner of the bizzar with heavy Lovecraft influences. In his lyrics, the same odd creatures and eerie backdrops are also represented.
