Tichester

Tichester, also known as Heath Street West, is a small neighbourhood enclave located in Toronto's Ward 21 and in the southeastern end of the former City of York . The area is bordered by Bathurst Street to the west and by Walmer Road to the east. To the south, Tichester begins just north of St. Clair Avenue West. To the north, the area ends just north of both Tichester Road and Heath Street West. Tichester became part of the current city of Toronto during the amalgamation of 1998 along with the rest of the City of York.
Residents of Tichester all live in the apartment buildings that make up neighbourhood's residences, some of which are senior citizens homes. Older early 20th century building line Tichester Road.
Newer mid-to-late 20th century apartment complexes can be found along Heath Street West, Tweedsmuir Road and Walmer Road. Ground was also broken on the new Heath + Tweedsmuir rental towers at the corner of Heath Street West and Tweedsmuir Ave.
Tichester is sometimes erroneously classified as being part of Forrest Hill . However, like other areas of the former City of York, Tichester's streets have street lights and blue street signs that distinguish it from former Old Toronto neighbourhoods and the green street signs used to identify Forrest Hill streets.
The Heath Street exit of the St. Clair Ave West TTC subway station is located along Heath Street West . The station is located on the yellow Spadina subway line and the exit provides direct access to cedarvale park. No other part of the former City of York has an entrance to the TTC Subway system.
St. Michael's College School
Tichester is home to the campus of . The institution is a private, all-boys Roman Catholic day school in Toronto, Canada. Currently administered by the Basilian Fathers, it is the largest school of its kind in Canada, with an enrolment of approximately 1,080 students from grades 7 to 12. St. Mike's, as it is known colloquially, is renowned for its academic and athletic achievements, with its hockey and football programs, along with its other top athletics teams, receiving much acclaim in past. St. Michael’s College School’s campus features state-of-the-art athletic facilities including the St. Michael’s Arena, the Eugene Melnyk Sports Field, gymnasium, Enzo Montemurro Fitness Facility, track, play area and side field.
St. Michael's College Athletics Facilities
* Arena: The school arena is located in the middle of the campus running north-south. The 45,000 square foot arena is a single-pad facility with an ice surface of 180 x 80 feet with seating capacity for 1000 people. The facility also includes the Mporium, St. Michael’s school store; the Alumni Lounge; snack bar; pro shop; workout room; and financial and accounting offices.
* The Eugene Melnyk Sports Field: The field runs diagonally in the north-east corner of the campus. The facility includes a 400 metre rubberized track, a regulation size football field, a large outdoor play area and a seating capacity for 1000 spectators. In the summer of 2004, Eugene Melnyk ’77 donated $1.8 million to St. Michael’s to upgrade the field with new state-of-the-art artificial grass, stadium lights, sound system, and an electronic scoreboard. During the winter months, one-third of the field is covered with a winterized dome, allowing for an indoor, artificial-grass playing field.
* Gymnasium: The gymnasium is located at the north-east end of the main school building, adjacent to the arena. The facility includes a 10,000 square foot double gymnasium. It is accessible through the athletic corridor in the basement of the school, or through the exterior doors at the north-east corner of the main school building. The bleachers, when open, are accessible through the first floor balcony that runs parallel with the school cafeteria and have a seating capacity of 500.
* Enzo Montemurro Fitness Facility: The fitness facility is located on the north side of campus, in the athletic corridor near the gymnasium. It is equipped with a variety of strength and conditioning equipment. The facility is available for student use during and after school hours.
* The Eugene Melnyk Sports Field: The field is surrounded by a 400 metre rubberized track. It is used by Track and Field teams, as well as for general warm up and training.
* The Play Area: The area is located behind the stadium and includes a paved surface and outdoor basketball nets. It is used by the school's physical education classes, intramurals and by community members to play ball hockey, foot hockey and 3 on 3 basketball.
* The Side Field: The Side Field is a secondary grassy field, located adjacent to the main sports field. It offers a batting cage, shot put and discus area. It serves as a practice field for Soccer, Football, Baseball, Lacrosse and Track and Field.
Power Up Project
In November 2012, Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited began rebuilding the aging underground electrical system in the community. The rebuild includes the replacement of the existing electrical cables and transformers within the City of Toronto’s public property allowance in front of or adjacent to customers' lot. It is expected to be completed by December 2013.
Building Fire
On Wednesday, March 20, 2013, dozens of local residents were temporarily displaced following a three-alarm fire.
