The Northstar Session

The Northstar Session is a 3-piece rock band from Los Angeles, CA. Most recently they appeared on television in 2010 playing themselves on NBC's Parenthood (Season 2; Episode 2, "No Good Deed"). In the episode the band plays the single You Come Up Like A Rose, off their 2010 Winter Collection album, with Crosby Braverman (Dax Shepard) playing their producer in the studio at the historic Village Recorders Studio, Los Angeles, CA.
Members of the band include: Kane McGee (Pedestrian, Radford) on drums and vocals, Matthew Szlachetka on guitar and vocals, and Dave Basaraba (Becca, Paul Freeman) on keyboards, vocals, saxophones and accordion.
Early Years
The band released their first recordings (a 2007 EP, To Be Continued...) with a performance at the Hotel Cafe in which Tim jones of Truth & Salvage Co. was so impressed by the band that he jumped up on stage and led a 3 song encore medley of Beatles tunes with the band. With help from Tim and Marco at the Hotel Cafe, the trio caught the ear of many well known musicians in the area, especially that of former bass player for Counting Crows, Matt Malley. Malley offered his expertise and his performance on the band's first full-length album, New Prehistoric Times. On the record Malley plays the Mohan Veena, a type of Indian slide guitar (a relative of the Sitar, with a shorter neck and more strings.) Drummer, Kane McGee's father, Gerry (Jerry) McGee (The Ventures, The Monkees) also appears on the album playing lead and rhythm guitars on multiple tracks, as does Stephen "Doc" Patt (Butch Walker, The Chambers Brothers, Jon Brion) on pedal steel.
