The Magical Blue Orchestra
|
The Magical Blue Orchestra is a band from Bodø, Norway, now based in Hemavan, Sweden. The band is fronted by Norwegian brothers Jørgen Larsstuvold and Andreas Larsstuvold. Starting out with a (early) Beatlesy sound and songwriting style, prompting Q magazine to describe their music as: "…a nice mix of classical influences, from Beatlesy to Bolan - good stuff" , the band have gradually shifted their sound towards another direction. The release of "Baby I Don't Care No More" on Lakeland Records UK, on March 1, 2010, marked the end of their "Love Me Do - period." These days The Magical Blue Orchestra are showing more and more of their psychedelic rock influences, with artists like: The Pretty Things, Kasabian, The Amorphous Androgynous, Syd Barrett, The Beatles and MGMT coming through in the bands songwriting and general sound. The result is a kind of heavy(ish) psychedelic soul music from the future. History Formation and early work (2006-2007) Formed in October 2006 in Hemavan, Sweden, by Norwegian brothers Jørgen Larsstuvold and Andreas Larsstuvold, the band played their first gig two months later (December 8, 2006). The name "The Magical Blue Orchestra" comes from a Norwegian band Andreas used to be in (in 2004) which was called [http://www.last.fm/music/Det+Magiske+Blå+Orkesteret "Det Magiske Blå Orkesteret"] (Norwegian for The Magical Blue Orchestra). In this band Andreas sang and played keyboards. On September 1, 2007 the band performed at the Retrofest music festival in Scotland (at culzean castle) after having been picked to play by a panel of judges at a gig in Glasgow on August 8, 2007. In October 2007, the band release "You Are Nice" from the upcoming demo album, "Greatest Hits 2007" (released December 2007) as a radio-only single. Swedish radio, and the internet podcast "Best Of Myspace" play the song. From Beatlesy To Bolan (2008-2009) Relocating to Dublin, Ireland, on July 30, 2008, the band proceed to play a total of 26 gigs in 4 months. One of them being an appearance on "Balcony Tv" ( September 22). Here they can be seen promoting their brand new demo album, "Greatest Hits 2008" (released July 2008). Moving back to Sweden in December 2008, the band release "She Shines On" from "Greatest Hits 2008" as a radio-only single. Norwegian radio play the track, while Swedish radio strangely opts for playing last years "You Are Nice" again. In July 2009 the brand new demo "This Is Rock N Roll" is played on the "Best Of Myspace" podcast, while Lakeland Records UK show an interest in another new demo, "Baby I Don't Care No More". Within days the band have signed a deal with them agreeing that they are to release the demo on an upcoming compilation album. On July 30/31 2009, the band head to "Nstudio Norrljud", a recording studio in Storuman, Sweden. Here the band record new song "Baron Saturday" (Produced by Markus Falkner) for an upcoming compilation album called "Blandat Godis 2". Come Back Clean (2009-2010) In October 2009, they enter a remix competition and finish 3rd (among approx. 400 contesters) with their remix/remake of Crystal Methods "Come Back Clean". "This is a beautiful interpretation of the track. I love the chords in the chorus. It's a really pretty mix that takes you somewhere very specific." - Scott Kirland On December 11, 2009, the compilation cd (Blandat Godis 2) featuring "Baron Saturday" is released, and the double A-side "This Is Rock N Roll/Baron Saturday" is given a digital only release the next day. Swedish radio plays "Baron Saturday". In December 2009, the bands new demo album "The Very Best Of The Magical Blue Orchestra 2009" starts spreading like wildfire across the internet. The album was released in 4 different versions (different track listings/running order etc) from September - October. All of these versions have appeared on various music download blogs/sites on the internet, and this is currently the only album in the trilogy of "best of / greatest hits demos" that is possible to find on the internet. On March 1, 2010, the demo "Baby I Don't Care No More" is released on Lakeland Records UK. It is available on Itunes, play.com and several other places.
