The GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals

The GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals (GS) is a free and publicly available Chemical Hazard Assessment (CHA) method developed by Clean Production Action (CPA) to accelerate advances in Green Chemistry for use by government agencies, environmental and consumer activists, consumer product manufacturers and suppliers interested in using safer alternatives chemistry. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection's policy Chapter 880 states the GreenScreen as an acceptable method to evaluate "...the human health and environmental hazard posed by the priority chemical and each identified chemical alternative...". Similar integration into policy regulations include the State of Washington Department of Ecology in pending Senate Bill 5181 where the GS is cited as the method of choice for evaluating safer chemical alternatives in upholstered furniture and children's products.
The method builds on the US EPA Design for the Environment Program (DfE) Alternatives Assessment Criteria for Hazard Evaluation. To apply the GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals, chemicals in products are screened against 18 human and environmental health hazard endpoints in order to identify any substance of very high concern and to differentiate among safer alternatives. Four benchmark scores, ranging from 1-4, are possible in the GS method, with benchmark 4 representing the lowest hazard to humans or the environment. It is also possible for a chemical to receive an "unspecified (U)" Benchmark.
