The Emmett Leahy Award

Emmett Joseph Leahy is regarded as the originator of the Records and Information Management field. As a tribute to Emmett Leahy, an icon of Records and Information Management, the Emmett Leahy Award was constituted in 1967 in the United States. The Emmett Leahy Award is known to be the greatest independent recognition of the individuals who have had major impact on the field of information management. This award honors the innovation, dedication and outstanding contributions by an individual globally every year. The selection of the winner is made by the independent Emmett Leahy Award Committee, which consists of the past Leahy Award winners.
Eligibility
A nominee for the award does not need to have specific professional or educational background. Also, it is not necessary to for one to be a member of any specific professional body or have certifications with regard to archiving or records and information management. It is necessary that the individuals have to be nominated from any country around the world. The recent winners of this prestigious award are from India, Hong Kong, Italy, Canada, United Kingdom and United States.
Emmett Leahy Award Committee
The Emmett Leahy Award Committee is responsible for selecting the annual Emmett Leahy Award recipient. The committee is independent and not associated with any other organization. The Leahy Award Committee is composed of the past winners of the Leahy Award.

Emmett J. Leahy (1910-1964)
The Emmett “Ed” Leahy started his pioneering career as an archivist at the National Archives in 1935 after which he moved to the US Navy Department as Director of Records Administration. Later, he also worked at National Microfilm Sales as Manager for Remington Rand. He established the National Records Council in 1948, a not-for-profit organization for creating awareness about the importance of records management. He became the chair of Records Management Task Force for the Hoover Commission during 1947-48. Leahy also established Leahy Business Archives and Leahy & Company, to offer consultancy services in records management which he managed until his early demise in 1964.
