The Ars Supernova

The Ars Supernova is a rock band based out of Austin, Texas fronted by Jirod Greene. Their sound has been described as big, explosive rock and has been likened to that of Queen's later material and at times Muse with more soul.
The Name
The name of the group comes from a modernization of the term ars nova (new art), a stylistic period in European music in the 14th century, and supernova, the brilliant collapse/explosion of a massive star and its subsequent redistribution of elements into space thus leading to rebirth. Together The Ars Supernova means the rebirth of art.
Origins
The group formed in late 2007 as a four-some consisting of Jirod Greene, David Butler, Matt Erickson and Ross Falcon. The latter three previously performed as rock band Smile and Nod, which they created six years earlier in their hometown of Lake Jackson, TX before relocating to Austin. Greene (Dustin Jarod Kemp), also a native of Lake Jackson, fronted funk rock band Contradiction in the early part of the decade. Contradiction was actually formed by Greene in competition with Smile and Nod, and Greene recruited then-Smile and Nod-guitarist Zoabe Hafeez to create the band. In 2003, Greene joined a capella group Apotheosis in College Station, TX.
Violinist Alejandra Cardenas of the string quartet Sarinda recorded with the group on their debut album Messenger as a guest musician before becoming a full member in later 2007. Shortly thereafter, the group recruited Dietrich Schmidt (former frontman/vocalist/guitarist of Plane of Existence) to be the keyboardist.
Philanthropy
The band founded SoundWave, their own non-profit initiative, as a means to give back to the community. Funded through a percentage of the band's ticket and merchandise sales, SoundWave worked with A Glimmer of Hope Foundation and H2O Africa Foundation to build a water well in Amhara, Ethiopia in 2008 to a promising graduating senior entering college to study music.
