Than Cho (16 December 1955 - 11 November 2013) was an orthopedic surgeon and professor. Personal life Cho was born to government employee parents. His father was U Maung Maung Cho, an officer at the Rangoon Port Authorities and his mother was Daw Than Su, a chief children's officer at the Rangoon Division Health Department. His only sister Daw Khin Than Yee was a nurse. He married Dr. Swe Swe Tun in 1979 and had two sons, a daughter and one grand child. Education Cho received his primary school education at SHS Kyeemyindine and the middle and high school education at SHS<ref name="newsletter"/> Lanmadaw. He joined the Institute of Medicine 1, in 1972 and obtained a MBBS degree in 1980. He completed his one year internship at the Rangoon General Hospital (RGH), the Central Women Hospital and the Rangoon Children Hospital. He served in the military (National Service Act) from 1984 to 1987, and joined the civil government service in 1987 September as Assistant Surgeon at Tharyawaddy Hospital. He was then transferred to Yangon Orthopedic Hospital from 1987 and worked there till 1990. He received his post-graduate training (a Master course in Orthopedics) at the Institute of Medicine,<ref name="newsletter"/> from 1990 to 1992. Career Cho served as First Assistant to the Professor in Yangon Orthopedic Hospital up to 1994. He underwent Fellowship training which was taken in the United Kingdom from 1994 to 1997 and received his FRCS (Edinburgh) and FRCS (London). He was trained at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in General Surgery and Orthopedics. He returned back to Myanmar in 1998 and served as First Assistant to the Professor at the Yangon Orthopedic Hospital till 1998. He was promoted to Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at North Okkalapa General Hospital in 1998. He was then transferred to Mandalay General Hospital as a lecturer in 2000 and became an Associate Professor at the University of Medicine 2, Orthopedic department in 2004. He obtained his Dr.Med.Sc (Ortho) in 2007 and was promoted to Professor at the Thingangyun Sanpya General Hospital in 2007. He was appointed Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Medicine (Mandalay) in 2009 April and later became the Rector of the University of Medicine (1), Yangon in May 2011. This is his last position which he occupied till he died on 11 November 2013. He was also the President Elect of the Myanmar Orthopedic Society from 2011-2013. He had a wide vision for the development of medical curriculum and had a strong desire to upgrade teaching facilities. He impressed many foreign visitors among who was Associate Professor Robert Bauze from the University of Adelaide, Australia, who made the following remarks on his demise. "I was very sorry to hear the death of Prof. Than Cho. The poor man had clung to life so determinedly it seemed that he would go on forever. He was a good man and one with vision who understood the needs of Myanmar and his institution but at the same time 'had his feet on the ground'. It was a pleasure to have known and worked with him."<ref name="newsletter"/>
