Cuda Wijeyeratne

Amithodana Gamini Cuda Wijeyeratne (born 14 December 1933) (known as Cuda Wijeyeratne) is a Sri Lankan consultant psychiatrist. Currently he is a council member and council representative on the board of management of the National Education Research and Evaluation Centre of University of Colombo. He was former Director of Sinhaputra Finance PLC, Kandy.
Early life
He is the youngest son of Sir Edwin and Lady Wijeyeratne. His two elder brothers were Tissa and Nissanka. His father Sir Edwin Wijeyeratne was a prominent politician who had become a cabinet minister, Ceylon second High Commissioner to the Court of St James and ceylon high commissioner to India.
Education
Cuda Wijeyeratne was born on the 14 December 1933. He received his primary school education at C.M.S. Ladies' College, Colombo and then he entered Royal College, Colombo in 1945 to commence his secondary education. He passed his senior school certificate examination and whilst in school he was a patrol leader in the scouts and was a junior and a senior cadet. In 1951 he left for the United Kingdom. He entered in 1952 where he completed the first MBBS exams in 1953 before returning to Sri Lanka in 1954 to continue his medical studies in the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Ceylon, qualifying as a doctor in 1959 with a class two degree with a distinction in surgery.
Medical career
He was appointed an intern house officer to the General Hospital Kandy & then to the Kegalla District Hospital in 1960. In early 1963 Dr Wijeyeratne left for the United Kingdom to take up duties as clinical assistant to Professor Sir Ronald Tunbridge, Professor of Medicine at the University of Leeds. He was appointed house physician to the professorial unit in the Leeds General Infirmary the same year. In 1964 he was appointed as Senior house officer in psychiatry at St James's University Hospital and in 1965 he moved to Bootham Park Hospital and Naburn Hospital in York as a registrar in psychiatry. He completed his diploma in Psychological Medicine from the University of Leeds in 1966. He returned to Sri Lanka in 1967 and till 1972 he was in General Practice in Kegalla.
Returning to UK he was offered the post of registrar in psychiatry in Naburn and Bootham Park Hospitals in York & then Senior Registrar to Professor Max Hamilton at the department of psychiatry, University of Leeds. In 1975 he completed his examinations for the membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He was registrar and then senior registrar to the Neuro-Psychiatric Unit and special centre for epilepsy in Bootham Park Hospital, York. In 1977 Dr. Wijeyeratne was appointed as a Consultant in general psychiatry with a special interest in old age psychiatry to the West Dorset Health Authority.
He served on the panels of the hospital advisory service and the panels of the royal college of psychiatry accreditation visits. He was appointed a second opinion approved doctor by the mental act commission. For several years he was tutor in psychiatry to the University of Southampton. He served on the ethics committee for the West Dorset Health Authority and as the psychiatric representative on the west dorset family practitioners committee. Dr Wijeyeratne was awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatry in 1996. He took early retirement and returned to Sri Lanka in 1997.
Family
In 1962 Dr Wijeyeratne married Manelle Polgasdeniya Bandaranayake the daughter of P B Bandaranayake former MP for Mawanella and Mrs Mallika Bandaranayake of Polgasdeniya Walauwa, Mawanella. He has two children, daughter Udeni and son Dapula, Management Consultant, Efficio International Consulting UK.
