Suman Mukherjee

Suman Mukherjee is an Indian Mime artist. His mime mixes realistic and artificial forms.

Suman was born in Howrah, West Bengal on 23d January 1968 and was educated at the University of Calcutta for his degree of Bachelor of Arts and at Rabindra Bharati University for his degree of Master of Arts in drama. He also completed five years diploma course from Jogesh Mime Academy, Kolkata. He is a regular public stage performer throughout India.

Career

Suman started his career at his age of eight. After taking a training of the mime art, he started performing mime shows throughout India with his father, who was an owner of a theatre company. In the year 1986 he formed his cultural organisation Howrah Kalamanjari, where he started to teach his expert students.

His media appearances include his performances at the Delhi and Kolkata Doordarshan (Official TV channel of India) and at a numerous TV shows. His important contribution in the field of mime art includes his lighting and costume related innovations, which first introduced in India by him. He also innovated the plots of individual mime performances, which debunked the previously accepted monotonous style introduced by Jogesh Dutta.

He taught as a Ballet instructor in Jogesh Mime Academy, Kolkata and as a mime teacher of Jawahar Sisu Bhaban (under Bal Bhaban) New Delhi. His productions include ‘Ballet Meets Mime’, ‘Modern Mime’ and ‘Classic Mime’.

* Gold Medal in National University Festival 1991 in Mime and Skit.
* National Scholarship from Human Resource Development, Govt. of Inida in 1993.
* Collaborative Performance at the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Kolkata in 1993.
* Ranked first in the Mime Competition in National Youth Festival 1994.
* External Examiner of Mime in Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata.
* Ballroom & Latin American dance teacher in Calcutta School of Music, Bullygange, Kolkata.
