The experimental design project Spatia3 (Spaces, cubed) was founded in 2005 by artist/draftsman, Joseph (JJ) Nicholson III, based on the emmerging philosophies in building science from the perspective of one trained in fine arts and graphic media. The emphasis of this project is to explore converging architectures: digital architecture and information architecture and to deliver imagery at the pulse of interrelated graphic formats. This project acts as a non-business delivery manual for specific projects and is not currently meant to be a for hire, rather a conceptual idea and an experiential platform for work done primarily with BIM (Building Information Modeling) programming. The project uses art and design, almost entirely from Nicholson's own portfolio, as well as from flash media assistance from grapic designer: Aaron Guzman.
Overview
The exploration of a digital spatial concept, from an engaged vernacular "cyberpunk" relationship, is a basis of this project. Spatia3 envisions to combine computer generated architectures into plug and play environments that can be witnessed and utilized as readymade (public and private) art while affecting multi-media projects - especially those in architecture and design. Exploration of digital archetypes as vector graphic are messaged in order to use architecture, urban design, planning, and information technology all within a tapestry that is entertaining and highly inclusive. While there have been no completed projects as a design entity, the work of Nicholson's has been focused on sustainability, a foundation of his overall direction. An early design concept titled "Cratehouse 1997" was derived out of the utility of prefabricated modules borrowed from his family's farm, Red Jacket Orchards, in Geneva, NY - and a concentration he'd been working on immediately before graduating from School of Visual Arts, in Manhattan, that same year. Several examples of computer renderings, done with various architecture firms for both design development and competitions, are also shown in the website.
