Stephen Blythe

Stephen L. Blythe is a Democratic politician from Florida. Blythe ran for in the United States House of Representatives (111th Congress) against Republican candidate Bill Posey and independent candidates Frank Zilaitis and Trevor Lowing. The election was for the open seat of Rep. Dave Weldon, who retired at the end of his term in January 2009. Blythe declared his candidacy in June 2007, before Rep. Weldon announced he would not be seeking reelection. Blythe was defeated by Posey, receiving 42% of the vote.
History
Blythe grew up in Kansas and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received a Bachelor of Science in biology. He studied nutrition in graduate school at Penn State for several years, and then attended medical school on a Public Health Service scholarship. He was graduated as a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, and subsequently obtained a Master of Health Administration from Webster University.
He began his medical practice in a small fishing village on the coast of Maine. Because of the proximity to the Canadian border, he also served as a Canadian Medicare provider. In July 1990, Blythe had a daughter, Rachel Blythe. Blythe made a number of trips to provide medical care in Guatemala and other countries, and has practiced medicine in the Melbourne, Florida area since 1997. In April 2009, Dr. Blythe joined MIMA, Brevard County's largest healthcare group.
He is a member of Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP) and a lifetime member of the Sierra Club.
