Noah Evanchuk is an attorney and Canadian social democratic politician. He is a candidate for the House of Commons of Canada in the 2011 Canadian federal elections. Evanchuk was nominated by the New Democratic Party to stand in the Saskatchewan riding of Palliser. The riding is widely considered to be a top target for the New Democrats, and was held by them until the 2004 elections, when the Conservative Party won. Early Years & Education Evanchuk was born in Kingston, Ontario while his father Randy was serving in the Canadian Armed Forces. He attended university at the University of Calgary, where he first became involved in politics. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan's College of Law in 2004. Political Involvement Evanchuk became politically active while at university. At the University of Calgary, Evanchuk helped re-establish the university's New Democratic Association, helping grow the organization into the second largest political club on campus, trailing only the Reform Party in terms of popular support among the student body. Evanchuk also participated in numerous activist causes. These causes included lobbying Calgary-based Talisman Energy to divest itself from its holdings in Sudan, and fighting the Alberta Progressive Conservative government’s health care privatization agenda. Evanchuk returned to Saskatchewan in 2001 to attend the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Law. During his tenure as a law student, Evanchuk served on the executive of the as the Policy Director and the federal council of the NDP. In addition, Evanchuk also was the executive of the Saskatchewan Young New Democrats (SYND) and served as the executive of the Saskatchewan NDP on an interim basis. Evanchuk also became active in his provincial constituency association, where he has been a provincial councillor, and served as executive of the constituency association for a time. Legal career Upon graduating from law school in 2004, Evanchuk completed his articles of clerkship at one of Saskatchewan’s oldest and largest firms, Balfour Moss, located in Regina, starting as a Student-At-Law, and subsequently as an associate. With an aim to developing an activist law practice, Evan became a sole practitioner in 2007, and has maintained a criminal defence practice since. He practices in association with other lawyers at Andrews Benko Rondeau Hawkins Brown Pyle & Evanchuk. Evanchuk has conducted trials at all levels of court throughout the province, including Moose Jaw and Regina on a regular basis, and argued before the Court of Appeal on multiple occasions. Evanchuk's areas of specialisation in the law are considered to be youth and mental-health issues, among others. Personal information Evanchuk is an active member of his community. He is married to Anna-Marie Kowalsky, and together they are raising their 3 year-old daughter and infant son. Among his many activities, he devotes volunteer time to the Salvation Army free legal clinic in Regina, providing pro bono advice to those in need. For the past 6 years, Evanchuk has also served as a volunteer coach in the Rancho Erhlo Sport Venture “Monday Night Football” program, a sport program aimed at inner city youth. He has been a board member of the Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Association, and is currently a board member of the Canadian Mental Health Association (Saskatchewan Division).
